S - Patch  I  2015

Background

S-patch is a prototype of a health device that has been showcased on CES 2016, it contains a Bio-Processor which is a single, compact chip that is capable of measuring PPG, ECG, skin temperature, GSR, and body fat.

Partner with Samsung LSI (large-scale integration) division our team is working on the follow-up design works of the original prototype.  As the Lead industrial designer of the project, I mainly take charge of CMF design, design prototype and functional prototype making and exploring wearable solutions of the device.

The device has inbuilt memory and Bluetooth connectivity. A user needs to attach it onto their chest so that it can read the heart rate in real-time. The data can be viewed inside an app on a connected smartphone or tablet. The activity and fitness-related data can then be shared with a doctor or a trainer in real-time.

Prototypes

After proposing several design schemes, the LSI team finally selected their favorite one over the others (see above photos). with the electronic design data provided by LSI division the electric engineer in our team was able to redesign the PCB board based on our new design, Then with the new PCB I started to make functional prototype for further design review and usability test.

During this phase, My works included modifying and redesigning the case for fitting the PCB, Mold making for band casting, Casting the band with silicon rubber of different shore hardness scales for usability test, etc.
